Yoga For Tennis!
Starts Monday 6th March 8.30am - 9.30am with Annette Wiik in the Clubhouse. Special introductory offer: 4 sessions for £45 (usual price £15 per session)
Tennis players do multi-dimensional movements on court and often have unique demands for flexibility, strength and mental concentration.
Yoga can help with many things, such as:
- build balance and symmetry on both sides of the body
- stretch tight muscles
- build more stamina
- encourage tissue resilience
- provide a greater range of motion and improve balance
- balance power and relaxation, bringing more energy to the body
- reduce risk of injury and pain typical for tennis players (legs, hips, shoulders, back, etc)
- bring a state of calm within, develop greater mind control and focus
The aim of my classes for Yoga for Tennis is to address various regions in the body such as:
- stretching hamstrings and increasing flexibility in hips and back to help the fast lunging, swinging and twisting on court
- opening region of the shoulders and across chest to allow for more fluid and open swing of racket
- lengthening spine and increasing flexibility in spine to improve rotation in ground strokes
- increasing leg strength to build more stamina and sense of steadiness on court
- improve full-body coordination
- develop strength and length evenly to counterbalance what happens on court
Every class will also address the mental game of tennis, introducing techniques for breath control and for calming the mind.
If you would like to book a session please contact Annette 07789 175 481 email@example.com
Mats and equipment will be provided.

New – Westside Social Bridge Club - Wednesday 7th December 7.30pm
Come and join our first informal, social bridge evening on Wednesday 7th December 2016, 7.30 p.m.
Many of our members play Bridge for fun and people have expressed an interest in developing social bridge at Westside on a more regular and formal basis. We hope to establish a regular social bridge evening on the first or third Wednesday of each month - starting at 7.30 and ending around 10.30. We already have several people lined up who have signed up to this idea. The committee are keen to use the club house for a wider range of events and to encourage social use.
If you play Bridge and fancy a fun, social evening of Bridge please come along on 7th December for a festive session with mince pies!! This session will be open to members and also to non-members if they come with a member as their bridge partner. However, in the future the sessions will only be open to members. Any non-tennis playing people can join Westside as a social member and come along to future sessions on their own or with their partner. It is not necessary to have a partner – if you enjoy the game, come along and you will be paired up with someone.
If you are unable to make it on the 7th December, but are interested for future Wednesdays, please let Maggie Short (firstname.lastname@example.org) know and you will be informed about future sessions. We would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in playing social Bridge at Westside, but who would prefer an alternative time/day of the week (e.g. early evening or lunch time sessions) so we can consider sessions to suit a range of members.
If you can make the 7th, please sign up at the bar as for other social events.

Westside Club Championships - Saturday 24th September 2016 - Sponsored by Totus and Prince
Its only two weeks to go until Finals Day and we are reaching the latter stages of the Club Championships. There are still plenty of matches that need to be finished over the next 13 days, meaning that there will be lots of good tennis on show in the evenings and weekends.
The Finals Day itself is taking shape, with the draw being looked at by the Tournament Sub-Committee, and other activities such as a BBQ, off court entertainment and happy hour!
Our new sponsor Totus are kindly providing the trophies this year and will be on hand to tell you about their
family-run building company and to discuss any projects you may be interested in doing. Prince are providing prizes for the winners and may hand out some freebies too hopefully!
A final e-mail with the order of play will be sent the week before Finals Day, but make sure you have Saturday 24th September firmly in your diary and you are going to make it to the club to either participate, or watch some of the best players that the club has battle it out for those trophies.
Scott Hampton Tournaments - Junior 17th September
The Scott Hampton Junior Tournament will take place on 17th September and the Adult Tournament will take place on 15th October.
As many of you know Scott was an active member of Westside and a friend to many, and this charity day each year allows us to remember him and raise money for a great cause.
With Westside's amazing support over the years the SCOTT HAMPTON FOUNDATION has been able to be part of research and now actively contributing funds to the very important new Rituximab trials on children with BURKITTS LYMPHOMA at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Malawi, where we made the film "Surviving Burkitt's " 2010.
A member of Westside from the age of 10, Scott was a very talented junior player and tennis remained a passion up to his early death at the age of 31 from the cancer Burkitt's Lymphoma.
www.scotthamptonfoundation.org.uk. Charity no. 1116860
With this in mind we would like to kindly ask members if they have anything that they would like to donate for the raffle to raise as much money as possible for the charity. If you do then please give the item or pledge (ie a free week's stay in your holiday home in Portugal) to Natalie the Club Manager.

Court Re-sufacing works - Commencing 30th August
Unfortunately the project has been delayed by the contractors Trevor May and they will now start work on courts 7, 8 and 9 Tuesday 30th August. The project is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete subject to weather conditions etc.
Works will affect the amount of parking space in the car park and will at times be noisy.
Obviously there will be less courts available to members during this period with pressure on courts particularly during the evenings and weekends so please be considerate of others and limit your time on court to an hour when others are waiting.
Olympics Fun Tournamnet - Saturday 20th August
Are we ready for the OLYMPICS?? Yes we are!! It will be a great summer of sports with the Olympics about to start in Rio.
To celebrate the Olympics season, we will be holding an Olympics fun tournament on Saturday 20th August 2-5pm. This will be based on a team event with fun singles and doubles quick tie-break sets with a twist to be played against various teams.
We will put you in a team captained by either a Westside team player or a coach, with the name of the country you will be representing. So do sign up at the bar, or call the club on 0208 9474987, and leave your mobile number and email details.
On the week of the tournament, you will receive an email either from Jenny or Natalie with your team details and the colour you should be wearing to represent the country. The cost is just £5 and will include balls and prizes. So we do need you to sign up and pay asap in advance of the day so that we can put the teams together.
If the weather is nice, we might put a BBQ on so that we can enjoy some cold beer and a burger after the event.
Prudential Ride London - 30th - 31st July
Prudential Ride London will take place again on the weekend 30-31st July effectively bringing South-west London to a halt so please be aware that there are many road closures and travelling to the club by car will be extremely difficult.
Prince Player Day - Saturday 25th June
Our traditional Prince Player Day will be held on Saturday 25th June from 2.30pm. In collaboration with our sponsors, Prince, we're proud to welcome John Isner back to Westside LTC!
North West Wimbledon Residents Association Parking Survey
For those who are interested in knowing a bit more about John, he is currently ranked 17th in the world, holds the world's third fastest serve at 157.2mph, is the second tallest player standing at 6' 10" and played the longest tennis match in history at our very own Wimbledon.
All our members and their friends, families and kids are welcome to come along to the club. The more the merrier! We'll be holding several activities during John's visit. Please do get to the club by 2.30pm if you want a chance to play with or get an autograph or photograph with John Isner.
Prince will be setting up a stall with Prince merchandise on offer. And we'll also be having a BBQ!
Westside voted against parking restrictions on Woodhayes Road and other roads surrounding the tennis club. The survey report is as follows:
NWWRA’s survey of members’ views in April 2016 was conducted with great thoroughness. Members in the roads surveyed were sent an email containing a link to a Survey Monkey on-line questionnaire or, if we had no email address, a paper copy was delivered with a stamped envelope for the reply. One response was permitted per household.
Social Tournament with Putney and Magdalene - Saturday 11th June
Results:159 responded of the 289 contacted, which is 55.0%. • Of these, 63 said they had a parking problem, 74 had no parking problem; 19 were undecided. • 67 said they would support a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ); 74 would not; 18 were undecided.
Other issues were raised in the comments, which included concerns about dangers resulting from excessive speed, parked vehicles blocking corners and sight lines for drivers exiting their driveways, and road blockages caused by parking on both sides of roads. These are usually road-specific but when of general applicability to our area we will continue to raise these with the Council.
Conclusion: As the Committee represents all NWWRA members, the results of the survey do not indicate that the Committee itself is justified in taking the matter further.
We will be hosting a joint social tennis session with Putney and Magdalen Tennis Clubs to provide some variety for social tennis to mix in with other nearby clubs.
It will be held from 2-6pm with BBQ and drinks after the event. There is a limit of 18 players and will be open mainly for social tennis players.
The format shall be based on a doubles team event with teams of 6 for the first half of the afternoon. It will then be followed by a social mix in amongst players from all three clubs. You are more than welcome to find your own team of 6, or sign up as a single person and we will put you in a team.
Please note that we can only take 18 players or 3 teams of six for this event. It will take up 9 courts for the afternoon, therefore there will be limited courts available for members. Social tennis will be replaced with this event.
The cost of the event is only £5 which will include balls and a voucher for a burger after the event.
This will be quite a popular event as you will have an opportunity to play against Magdalen and Putney clubs' social tennis players and hopefully the sun will be out for us to enjoy the BBQ and some drinks after.
Please sign up at the bar, and we would ask that you pay at sign up, not only to secure your place but also to help us with advance preparation so that we're not busy taking payment on the day.
Just as a side note, social tennis on Saturday 4 June will be in the 20 minutes rotation King/Queen of the Court format with a coach mix-in. So do come along and practise with a coach in preparation for the Putney-Magdalen event (not that we're that competitive... Lol!)
Social Tennis - Saturday 4th June
We had a very successful organised coach mix-in social on Saturday 30th April with a 31 players turning up for social tennis on the day - more than double the numbers who signed up in advance!
The King of the Court format was played whereby winners move up and losers move down and the pairs split to play with a different player. Pete Mojzis was our coach and at least 11 players had the benefit of playing with or against Pete. Martin Tann and Farida Seddon, our King and Queen of the Court, stayed pretty much at the top two courts for the five rounds played in the two hours.
The general feedback on the session was good and enjoyable, so we will be organising this again as a monthly event. The next session will be on Saturday 4th June 2-4pm. Remember, this is a free event for members. Please do sign up in advance to help with pairings, court allocation and general organisation. Thank you for your support in turning up, the more players we have, the better the social tennis session is.

and suffering sexual exploitation.
Last year, we helped over 3000 children and young people in south west London. Donations help us to fund additional fun activities for the children, such as seaside trips, Easter Egg Hunts, an annual Exhibition
of their Art and Summer holiday activities at our centre. We hope you can come and support this worthy cause.
Following some recent changes to the committee, we are pleased to announce that Tony Tsoukkas has agreed to take on the role of Chairman of the club. As some of you might know, Gary and his wife are moving up to Shropshire at the end of the Summer, so Gary has stepped down from the committee and as Chairman.
Hannibal Brown Wine
Nick Williams and Katie Jonas have also stepped down from the committee and they are replaced by Mark Eori as Men’s Team Rep and Sophie Spallone as Social Rep respectively.
We would all like to thank Gary for all his hard work as Chairman during a particularly difficult period at the club and also to thank Nick and Katie for all their support and hope to see them all at the club in the future.

We will need your help in hosting this event as we are looking for volunteers to help on the day. The activities will include mini tennis, family tennis, cardio tennis, social tennis and adult coaching. All we would need you to do is to assist Alison, Natalie, the coaches and several committee members to give your friendliest Westside welcome to the non-members and direct them to the right courts for the right activities. The activities are bookable so we will know who will be attending these in advance.
The available volunteer slots are:

Depending on the weather, we might be able to organise a barbecue, so please do come along whether to play social tennis, socialise with members or watch some of the Rome Masters semi-finals that Saturday - who knows, Andy Murray might be playing!
We are holding an event at Westside on Saturday 7th May to remember and celebrate the life and contribution of our former club president, manager, team captain and champion - Keith Harrison.
Keith was extremely well known and loved by many people in the tennis playing community – not just at Westside but at numerous clubs in Surrey. We invite club members and players across the county to celebrate Keith’s life and contribution to the game in a way that Keith would appreciate.
The club will be holding a tournament from 2- 5 pm on Saturday 7th May for members and non members from clubs in Surrey. All standards of play are welcome. The cost of entry is £5 per player to cover the cost of balls and prizes.

We anticipate a high level of interest in both the tournament and the evening event, so urge you to put your names down as soon as possible. Sign up sheets are behind the bar. Payment is required on sign up. Closing date for entry is 22nd April.

Artificial Clay Courts - Some More Etiquette
If you are able to encourage friends and family to join Westside as members, the club will offer you either a free lesson with one of our coaches, or £35 behind the bar.
Please see the managers for further details.
Everybody seems to be enjoying our new clay courts, and it’s been great to see that the etiquette of dragging them with the dragnets after playing is being followed!
NB 1. We now have 6 dragnets, so 2 for each court. The next bit of etiquette is to please make sure that when you have finished using them, they are always left under the signs worded clearly “Dragnet and Brush Station”. The signs for courts 10 and 12 are on each side of the benches at the end of each court, and the signs for the court 11 are at the back of each side of the court.
NB 2. If you have put your bag down on the clay while playing, if you going into the club house after your game please make sure that you brush the sand off the bottom of your bag and leave it on the luggage rack!
